Clermont to earn €50,000 following Ivory Coast's AFCON triumph

A curious set of clauses in Emerse Faé’s contract will see Ligue 1 side Clermont Foot pocket €50,000 following Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph earlier this month.

Up until June 2022, Faé, who replaced now-Olympique de Marseille manager Jean-Louis Gasset mid-tournament, was the manager of the reserve team at Clermont Foot. The former FC Nantes and OGC Nice midfielder had a contract with Les Auvergnats that ran until 30th June 2024.

The Ivory Coast Football Federation therefore had to come to an agreement to bring Faé into the national team setup, initially as an assistant manager. To allow Faé to leave, Clermont set three conditions: firstly, the Ivory Coast would stage a friendly in Clermont before 30th June 2024; secondly, in the event of Ivory Coast winning the AFCON with Faé as part of the staff, Clermont would receive €25,000; and finally, should Faé become manager of the Ivory Coast, another €25,000 must then be paid to the Ligue 1 club, who currently sit rock bottom of the French top flight.

With the latter two clauses met during the recently completed AFCON in the Ivory Coast, Clermont will therefore pocket €50,000.
