20-year-old who replaced Darwin Nunez in Uruguay should be Michael Edwards' first Liverpool signing - opinion

At the start of the international break, there has been some good news for Liverpool. Darwin Nunez has had to pull out of the Uruguay squad due to a minor injury which will keep him at the AXA training centre. However, he will be back fit and available to play Liverpool’s first match after the break against Brighton.

That’s good news for Liverpool because it means Nunez, who has had a few niggles recently, won’t be risked. Instead, he will have time to recover and get back into the perfect shape. Which is exactly what Liverpool need during this crucial period.

For Uruguay, Nunez’s absence is understandably a blow. However, Marcelo Bielsa still has a strong squad, and in order to replace the Liverpool forward, he has actually called up another Liverpool forward for the first time. A player who should also be on Michael Edwards’ transfer radar.

Luciano Rodriguez should be on Liverpool’s radar

Bielsa’s replacement for Nunez in the Uruguay squad was Luciano Rodriguez of Liverpool Montevideo in Uruguay. The 20-year-old forward is expected to make his debut for the international team in a significant moment for his career.

Rodriguez is highly rated and can play all across the front three. For Liverpool Montevideo he has 18 goal contributions already in his senior career in 41 matches. He also scored six goals and registered one assist in five matches for Uruguay’s U23 national team.

Meanwhile, he won the silver medal with Uruguay at the U20 Copa America last year, scoring four goals and registering three assists in nine matches for his country. And was also later part of the Uruguay squad that won the U20 World Cup.

Still very young and very versatile, Rodriguez is extremely highly rated. He is exactly the type of player Michael Edwards should look to target for FSG as the club’s owners embark on their multi-club model, with the goal of attracting more global talents. Rodriguez could be an excellent first signing in this new Edwards era. Plus, we also just really like the idea of Liverpool signing someone from Liverpool Montevideo.
