A lot of Rangers problems in recent years haven't come from the club's ability to spot players, but from the inability to choose the right ones to sign.

The list of ones that got away is endless with players like Andreas Skov Olsen or Lewis Ferguson the ones that hurt the most.

If Philippe Clement is to take Rangers to the level that he wants, players like one who Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst both missed out on and is now linked with a move to Liverpool, have to be signed.

Rangers missing out on Crysencio Summerville proving costly

Leeds United have stumbled in recent weeks when it looked like they were automatic promotion favourites.

One of the key reasons for their season being a success so far has been Crysencio Summerville.

Rangers were mentioned as being in the hunt for the 22-year old winger's signature when he was still a teenager.

Contracted to Feyenoord at the time, a loan spell at ADO Den Haag had caught the attention of Ibrox scouts and the Dutch youth international was clearly flattered:

“The teams that are interested in me are beautiful clubs.

“But that would be another step for me and I don’t think about moving at all. All my thoughts are with Feyenoord.

“We are talking about a new contract and it’s all about what is best for me. The conversations are going well. For me, it’s not about money.

“The financial side of the contract is the very last thing on my mind. It’s about what is my best path for my career.

“It’s not even about just next season, it’s about the long-term and I want to feel Feyenoord trust me.

“I want to play at De Kuip every week and be one of the club’s important players.”

Nils Koppen has to fix recruitment problems of the past

The new contract at Feyenoord never emerged, neither did the chance to make an impact in the first-team because, that summer, he was sold to Leeds Utd for a paltry £1.3m.

Meanwhile, Rangers were adding players like Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker and Sheyi Oj to their squad.

With 20 goals and 10 assists this season, Summerville has shown why Rangers were interested in the first place.

These are the numbers that have seen Liverpool named by Fabrizio Romano as one of the clubs now keeping tabs on Leeds situation:

“From what I heard, it is true that Summerville is one of the players they (Liverpool) are monitoring. They have sent their scouting team (to monitor Summerville) several times even before Edwards returned.”

The Championship side are one of many carrying a lot of debt and selling their biggest asset would go a long way in helping to bring this down.

£1.3m?

This is where Nils Koppen has to be trusted.

An elite level recruitment director should be able to make the right decision between a Crysencio Summerville and Brandon Barker for Rangers.

If they can't, mistakes like this one will continue to be made.
