For all intents and purposes, it looked like Jose Cordoba was set to be the first signing of a hotly anticipated Rangers rebuild this summer.

Reports in Panama kicked everything off and only this week it was being claimed that Rangers are in 'final negotiations' with the centre-back.

Throw Jose Cordoba removing Levski Sofia from his social media channels into the mix, amid reports of the defender being given the Ibrox treatment v Kilmarnock, and suddenly a £3.2m move looked to be on.

Well, that was until this morning in Bulgaria.

Cordoba 'prefers' England alternative

It's no secret that there is plenty of intrigue around Jose Cordoba heading into the summer transfer window.

A local Panamanian journalist claimed that 'half of Europe' are interested in securing a deal for the Rangers-linked defender.

With the likes of Besiktas, Lille and USG all mentioned in dispatches, it initially appeared Rangers had won the race to sign the player.

But now a report in Bulgarian outlet Gong has cast some doubts over Rangers completing the transfer of Jose Cordoba this summer.

The report claims that Norwich City are also locked in discussions over a move for Jose Cordoba and are actually willing to offer Levski Sofia more than the widely reported figure attached to Rangers.

What's more, in rather discouraging claims, the report suggests that Cordoba 'prefers to play in the Championship' despite having a 'preliminary contract' in place at Ibrox.

Public Rangers transfer blow on horizon?

What's that old adage about waiting until the scarf is hoisted above a player's head?

Whilst incoming Rangers director of recruitment Nils Koppen certainly looks to be busy already this window, no transfer is guaranteed until a contract is signed.

As things stand, it would appear that at the very least there is substantial interest in Jose Cordoba from Rangers and elsewhere but until a contract is sign this saga is anything but over.

Whilst we'll wait to see if any sources closer to home begin to report that the deal is under threat, Rangers fans will be watching on nervously.

At 22-years-old Jose Cordoba very much fits the transfer vision of the Rangers recruitment team this summer.

But given the high-profile nature of the chase, missing out on the transfer would be a very public blow even at this early stage of the window.
