Not played in '24 but £4m Gers star could get one last chance

Ben Davies has had a bizarre season for Rangers, playing as many games in the Europa League as he has domestically all season.

In the six games the 28-year old has played locally, he has won five and lost once – the dismal defeat at Ibrox that was Michael Beale's last game in charge as manager.

Since Philippe Clement arrived at Rangers, Ben Davies has hardly been seen other than towards the end of the Europa League campaign – could he now be set for a surprise recall?

Rangers reprieve could be handed to Ben Davies

News broke on Friday that Connor Goldson will be out for the rest of the season in what is a huge blow to the manager.

Leon Balogun and John Souttar have been paired in recent weeks; however, the former has not long returned from injury and the latter doesn't exactly have a great history in terms of time spent in the treatment room either.

For those that might not be too keen on the idea, Davies played in every Europa League group match as Rangers topped the group.

His performance at home to Real Betis was as good as it was surprising but Davies was maybe just trying to impress the new gaffer:

"Everyone’s coming into training trying to impress him and get in his team.

"You’ve seen him give out opportunities to players off the bench so I think everyone’s got the clean slate that he said.

"We’re just coming in and trying to work hard and show him what we can do."

Davies can be trusted if Clement needs him

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Davies has caught his manager's eye having gone from being a regular starter to not even making the squad sometimes.

Ben Davies is nowhere near as bad a player as some would have you believe though.

His distribution is as good as any of our defenders, he's a solid reader of the game and he certainly isn't the slowest of our four senior centre-halves.

Despite this, the evidence suggests that the future doesn't look great for Davies with the former Liverpool defender yet to make an appearance in 2024.

With five games left to go, this could all change.

Davies has made mistakes in his time at Rangers but he has also got enough decent performances under his belt to still attract attention from elsewhere.

If he gets a chance, it might be his last for the club.
