Report: Sheffield United showing interest in loaned-out Leeds talent, new contract talks planned

Sheffield United want Stuart McKinstry as Leeds United fight to keep hold of the young winger having impressed at Motherwell.

Leeds have been very active in terms of signing young players ever since Victor Orta’s arrival back in 2017.

The Whites have managed to bring in the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Pascal Struijk, Wilfried Gnonto, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood – all of whom are now making a first-team impact.

Others have had to go out on loan in order to play first-team football and that has been the case for McKinstry.

Sheffield United want Stuart McKinstry

McKinstry, 20, was born in Wishaw, just about three miles away from Motherwell – the club McKinstry grew up supporting.

McKinstry came up through the Motherwell ranks but Leeds pounced in 2019, luring him to Elland Road.

Breaking into the first-team at Leeds has been difficult though with McKinstry making just two senior appearances.

Leeds allowed McKinstry to head back home with a loan move to Motherwell and the move has been a great success.

McKinstry has bagged two goals and one assist in nine games – and he is now attracting major interest.

The Scottish Sun report that both Sheffield United and Stoke City are tracking McKinstry ahead of possible moves.

Leeds would hate to lose a talented young player to a Yorkshire rival and Sheffield United appear to be hovering with intent.

It’s noted that McKinstry is out of contract at the end of the season and Leeds are now planning talks to try and keep the Scot.

Leeds are fighting to keep hold of McKinstry and will hope for movement soon ahead of the January transfer window.

Whilst McKinstry can’t sign a pre-contract deal with Sheffield United or any other English club in January, he can sign one with a Scottish club.

If Celtic or Rangers show an interest in McKinstry, Leeds may well lose the talented young winger for next to nothing – and that should encourage talks just as much as the Sheffield United links.
