Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are among the Championship clubs looking to sign Jarrad Branthwaite on loan from Premier League giants Everton, as reported by the Daily Mail.

A Toffees side with all the defensive fortitude of a picket fence in front of Area 51 wasn’t exactly the ideal place for Branthwaite to hone his talents last term.

Still only 19 years of age, the former Carlisle United starlet looked understandably a little lost at times as Everton flirted with relegation throughout a miserable 2021/22 campaign, that 18th minute red card in the 3-2 home defeat to Brentford in May summing up the entire disaster of a season for both player and club.

A temporary departure from the blue half of Merseyside, then, could do Branthwaite the world of good.

Everton could loan out Jarrad Branthwaite

According to The Mail, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are keen. As are Huddersfield Town, Blackpool and Cardiff City. PSV Eindhoven, meanwhile, could offer Branthwaite the chance to play Champions League football.

Bundesliga.2 champions Schalke are also in the race. And one of European football’s great underachievers already have a good relationship with Everton, following Jonjoe Kenny’s successful stint on loan at the Veltins Arena.

The Mail adds that Branthwaite has admirers at Manchester United too.

“Branthwaite was brilliant,” former Carlisle boss Chris Beech said of the then-17-year-old back in 2019

“I look at people like Declan Rice and Michael Carrick, who’ve played a little bit of both (in defence and midfield) Jarrad has the capabilities of doing both.”

“He has so many quality attributes to become a top player,” adds Steven Pressley, who handed Branthwaite his senior debut in the EFL.

“I told people he was a future England international. The truth is, I think he has got everything. He can pass the ball almost equally as good with both feet. He’s a terrific footballer.

“And If he continues to develop, then, without doubt, he can be an England player.”

Sunderland’s interest in Branthwaite comes after Callum Doyle – another teenage, homegrown centre-back – returned to parent club Manchester City. Fellow defender Bailey Wright is also out of contract.
