Report: Tottenham chasing £12m Championship midfielder this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to the Championship for midfield options, with a potential move for Stoke City’s Wouter Burger on the cards this summer, but they will face competition from Sheffield United.

It is well known that Spurs are keen to add a number 6 to their ranks this summer, with Ange Postecoglou looking to bolster his midfield options.

While a host of big names from the Premier League and around Europe have been mentioned in relation to the role, it seems Spurs are not averse to looking down the footballing ladder and scouring the Championship for potential additions.

That’s where Stoke City come in, and their Dutch midfielder, Wout Burger. The 23-year-old joined the Potters last summer, and despite a miserable campaign for the club, Burger impressed with three goals and four assists in 39 games (Transfermarkt).

But now, a year after joining the Championship side, Burger could be on the move, with TEAMTalk suggesting Spurs are looking at giving the defensive midfielder a chance to show what he can do in the top flight.

Spurs will face competition from recently relegated Sheffield United, and two other Premier League clubs, with a bid of around £12m expected to be enough to prise Burger away from Stoke.

Burger, who is a “favourite” at the club, is a wanted man and Stoke now face a “battle” to keep hold of him. It is thought the player “will make the step up” to the Premier League sooner rather than later.

With a relatively “low asking price,” it is believed Spurs see this as an opportunity to add a new player and still be in a position to make more signings.

We can look at this as £12m is not a lot so it allows us to sign more players, or we can think about how that £12m could be added to the budget to turn a good signing into a great one. I would rather us spend more on the positions we need than going for low-value options.
