Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney has told their official club YouTube channel that he would like to re-sign Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers for next season.

Wigan Athletic landed the defender on a temporary basis in the January transfer window.

Chambers, 19, is due to return to Anfield when his deal at the DW Stadium expires.

Here is a look at three players they should target if they aren’t able to get him…

Josh Edwards

The 23-year-old has caught the eye playing up in Scotland with Dunfermline Athletic. He has been on the books of his current club since 2019 but his future is up in the air ahead of this summer.

Football Insider have reported that League One pair Lincoln City and Oxford United are admirers of him. Wigan Athletic should join the queue of clubs interested in him as Maloney prepares for the next campaign in the third tier.

Brandon Fleming

He is not part of Hull City’s plans going forward, as per a report by HullLive, and he will be allowed to find a new home for next term. The 24-year-old would be ideal for the Latics as he is young, has potential to get better in the future and has experience of playing in the Football League.

The full-back has been with the Tigers for his whole career to date and has risen up through their youth ranks. He has had loan spells away from East Yorkshire in the past at Bolton Wanderers, Oxford United and Shrewsbury Town to get some experience under his belt.

Owen Dodgson

The 21-year-old is due to return to Burnley from his loan spell up in Scotland at Dundee. His chances of breaking into the Clarets’ first-team are slim though and a switch to Wigan Athletic would help him get some regular game time.

He played for Manchester United’s academy before moving to Turf Moor and has since played once for the Clarets. The Lancaster-born man has also had spells at Rochdale and Barnsley to boost his development.
