Sunderland are said to be eyeing Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle, and the star man has just taken home the player of the year and players’ player of the year titles at the Latics.

Sunderland will be aware that goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is drawing interest. High-profile Premier League clubs have been linked with the shot-stopper amid his starring role on Wearside.

That could mean the Black Cats are in need of a replacement, and one man eyed has been Wigan Athletic star Tickle.

The 22-year-old has broken into the first-team and become one of the Latics’ most important players. His talents have been recognised with an England U21s call-up and some eye-catching links of his own.

While Sunderland are keen, it has also been said that Premier League sides have scouted Tickle.

Now, as he nears the end of a fantastic individual campaign, the Wigan Athletic ace’s efforts have earned notable recognition. The Latics hosted their end of season awards on Thursday night, and Tickle took home two of the most sought-after gongs.

He was voted as player of the year by supporters and also earned the players’ player of the year title.

Who is this?

Making a move up?

While Wigan Athletic will be hopeful of retaining Tickle’s talents, it might be tough to keep him onboard.

He’s a player on the up and as an England U21 international, it’s clear that he’s highly-rated beyond the DW Stadium. If Sunderland come calling – or perhaps even Premier League sides – it might be tricky for Wigan to stand in Tickle’s way.

The Latics may well find themselves as the fall guys in a domino effect of events including Patterson moving on from Sunderland. Although, Tickle looks to have options beyond the Wearside outfit too, so time will tell just how his situation pans out.

This double award swoop affirms just how good he has been this season though. It’s been a memorable breakthrough for Tickle and one that could mark the start of an exciting career.
