Rotherham United miss out as EFL side confirm appointment

Stevenage have appointed Rotherham United-linked Alex Revell as their new permanent manager, as announced by their official club website.

Stevenage have handed the 40-year-old their full-time managerial position following his recent spell in caretaker charge. The League One side have been in the hunt for a new boss since Steve Evans’ exit to Rotherham United.

The Millers have been interested in luring Revell to the New York Stadium to boost their backroom staff, as per the  Rotherham Advertiser. However, they will now have to look elsewhere.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace told their website: "We've taken our time to consider various candidates, but we believe the dynamics of our squad dictated that Alex was the natural successor to Steve.

“Alex knows the players, he's been part of the original recruitment metric and, importantly, he's held in high esteem by the dressing room. However, we wanted to improve our chances of success on the pitch by providing an experienced coach/assistant manager with in-game expertise and years of experience winning games.”

Stevenage turn to familiar face

Stevenage’s decision to turn to Revell on a permanent basis makes sense. He knows the club, how they operate and all their players already.

It is a great opportunity to show what he can do in the third tier ahead of the next campaign.

Boro have adapted well to life at that level following their promotion from League Two and flirted with the play-offs this past season.

Rotherham United will have to consider other options if Evans wants to bring in anymore staff members. The Millers will face Stevenage next term following their relegation from the Championship and will be eyeing an immediate promotion.

Revell played for the Yorkshire club during his playing days and was a hit up front for them, scoring 34 goals in 170 games.  He also had spells at Cambridge United, Leyton Orient, Cardiff City, Northampton Town, Wigan Athletic and Stevenage before he hung up his boots in 2020.

What next for Stevenage and Rotherham United?

Both sides have published their retained list already. Stevenage will be hoping for a similar season to last as they look to push for the top six again on a tight budget.

They will be pleased to have sorted their managerial situation already and it gives Revell plenty of time to prepare for the summer.

As for Rotherham United, Evans knows what it takes to get out of League One and has his sights set on going up.
