Charlton Athletic captain George Dobson has refused to be drawn on his future amid a previously announced move to Hungarian side Fehervar.

Charlton Athletic have seen midfielder Dobson become arguably their most important player in recent seasons.

He struggled in a stint with Sunderland but after parting ways with the Black Cats in the summer of 2021, Dobson has reminded everyone just what he’s capable of in a starring stint at The Valley.

Unfortunately, it seems as though his stay in South London will be coming to a close.

A pre-contract agreement with Hungarian side Fehervar was announced earlier this year and while manager Nathan Jones has frequently expressed a desire to retain Dobson, the South London Press has reported on several occasion that the midfielder’s Fehervar agreement is binding.

As such, the only way for him to stay at Charlton Athletic will be if the club pay a fee to re-sign him.

Now though, Dobson has refused to be drawn on what the summer holds when quizzed on the matter. Regardless of what’s to come though, the 26-year-old clearly values his time with the Addicks incredibly highly.

“There is not a lot I can comment on,” Dobson said when asked about the matter (quotes via the South London Press).

“I don’t want to be the awkward egg in the room. Football is a weird game. A lot of things happen behind the scenes that you can’t comment on.

“It’s an incredible football club.https://the72.co.uk/2024/04/30/charlton-athletic-favourite-announces-retirement-aged-33/ Whatever happens, I have had the most incredible three years. To captain this football club has been the best honour in my career. I genuinely think it will be the best honour of my career.

“I don’t want to comment too much on it, because I can’t. We will see.”

Who is this?

A firm favourite nonetheless

Time will tell just what comes of Dobson’s situation but with the previous Fehervar announcement and what the South London Press have reported consistently, it does seem as though a new challenge awaits the midfielder.

Some of those at Charlton Athletic may not have given up hope of retaining him, or perhaps they’re just limited in what can be disclosed publicly with Dobson remaining fairly drawn on the topic too.

Regardless though, Dobson will be fondly remembered for his time at the club.

He had the firm respect of supporters already thanks to his exemplary leadership and strong performances in the middle of the park.

However, having maintained his commitment and performance levels over the second half of this season after his January transfer collapse and the penned pre-contract deal, Dobson deserves another level of admiration for his character.

There’s no doubt he’ll be a big miss for Charlton Athletic if an exit awaits.
