The72’s writers offer their Grimsby Town vs Newport County prediction ahead of the League Two clash on Saturday.
Grimsby Town drew 1-1 at home to Bradford City in their last League Two outing. They led 1-0 after Curtis Thompson’s goal but were pegged back in added-on time by Richie Smallwood’s late penalty.
The Mariners are sat in 21st place in the table and are two points above the drop zone. They have six fixtures left to play this season as they fight to retain their EFL status.
As for Newport County, they are 13th. The Exiles only have five more matches to get through before they can put their feet up for the summer.
Graham Coughlan’s side are seven points off the play-offs but they were battered 4-0 at home by Crawley Town last time out. It means a response is a must ahead of this long trip to Blundell Park.

“The Mariners are winless in their last four games and need to get more points on the board to avoid slipping back into the National League.
“This is a perfect time to play Newport County. Their season is fading away and they don’t really have anything to play for now.
“They will be low on confidence after their heavy defeat to Crawley Town and I have a feeling the hosts may just sneak a significant victory here.”

“Grimsby Town could really do with a win here and amid Newport County‘s poor form, the hosts might get the valuable three points they need. However, draws have been a regular occurrence for the Mariners, and I can see this ending level too.
“Newport aren’t a side that draw much but while I believe they have what it takes to win here, I think their lack of form will show and they’ll be unable to get all three points.
“I’ll say this ends level, but the win could be there for the taking.”
