'I'd love to' – Liverpool defender keen on summer move to EFL club

Liverpool defender Adam Lewis has said he would ‘love’ to stay at loan club Newport County.

Newport County swooped to re-sign the left-back on a temporary basis last summer and he has since impressed with the League Two side.

Lewis, 24, has made 26 appearances in all competitions for the South Wales outfit, 22 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with two goals and six assists.

He has provided this update on his future plans, as per a report by BBC Sport: “I love Newport, I’ve had chats with the gaffer and the club but I’ll always have my options open. I’d love to stay here, I would, but that’s something I’ve got to speak to the gaffer and the club about.”

Newport County loanee wants to stay

It seems likely that Lewis will move on from Liverpool this summer. He is no longer a youngster and his chances of breaking into their first-team are very slim in the Premier League.

He has been on the books at Anfield for his whole career to date and has risen up through the academy ranks of the Merseyside giants.

The full-back has been a regular for the Reds at various youth levels in the past and has played once for their senior team in an FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury Town back in February 2019.

Lewis has had loan spells away at Amiens, Plymouth Argyle and Livingston in the past to get some experience under his belt.

Newport had him in the last campaign before bringing him back for a second year last July.

The England youth international has found a home at Rodney Parade and has been in decent form under Graham Coughlan. He has made it clear he would be interested in staying put but his future remains up in the air right now.

His immediate focus will be on having a strong end to this term with the Exiles. They won 5-3 at home to Morecambe last night.

Newport are sat in 12th place in the table and are only five points off the play-offs with nine matches left to play. They face an away trip to AFC Wimbledon this weekend.
