The72’s writers offer their Colchester United vs Crewe Alexandra prediction ahead of the League Two clash on Saturday afternoon.

Colchester United head into the final day knowing that they can confirm their safety by avoiding defeat on home soil. They’re sat three points clear of the drop zone as things stand.

Danny Cowley’s men can survive in the fourth tier even if they lose at the weekend, although their goal difference is only slightly better than that of Sutton United below them so they would rather avoid risking that outcome.

Crewe Alexandra, on the other hand, sit in the top seven but have not yet confirmed their place in the play-offs. They also require just a point to achieve their goal.

Lee Bell’s side occupy 6th spot as it stands, with 5th place the highest they could reach and 8th spot just outside the play-offs being their worst case scenario.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

“It has been a far from perfect end to the season for Colchester United, although they have certainly shown their willingness to fight at times.

“Knowing that just one point is needed to get them over the line, I am expecting to see them at their best against Crewe.

“The fact that the visitors also need just one point to achieve a play-off spot could certainly have an impact on the game.

“Anything can happen on the final day, but I’m expecting the two sides to match each other on Saturday. Neither side are likely to risk throwing too much at their opponent, so a draw seems reasonable.”

Colchester United vs Crewe Alexandra prediction: 1-1

James Ray

“You have to wonder if both these sides are just running out of steam at the worst time.

“It’s been a long relegation battle for Colchester United and that heavy defeat to Doncaster Rovers will be a punch to the gut. However, if anyone can get the players up off the ground and up for the fight, it’s Danny Cowley.

Crewe Alexandra have been stuttering too, and that doesn’t bode well if they get into the play-offs.

“I think it will lead to a really tense game here but ultimately, I can see both getting the point they need.”
