Salah-less Egypt exits AFCON in last 16 after shootout loss to DR Congo

Egypt was eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations last-16 stage Sunday after falling to DR Congo in a penalty shootout.

The Pharaohs, who were without talisman Mohamed Salah due to injury, drew 1-1 with the Leopards after 120 minutes. They played with 10 men following Mohamed Hamdi's second yellow card seven minutes into extra time.

DR Congo prevailed in a tightly contested shootout when goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi converted after an unsuccessful effort from fellow shot-stopper Mohamed Abou Gabal. DR Congo won 8-7 on penalties.

More to come.
