2023 AFCON: Mauritania v Algeria report

Mauritania claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Algeria in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group D match played at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on Tuesday night.
Date: 23 January 2024
Mauritania (1) 1 (Dellahi 37′)
Algeria (0) 0
First 45': Although Algeria started the first-half well with goalkeeper Babacar Niasse forced to pull off a decent save to deny Adam Ounas, Mauritania grew into the game and created good chances. Anthony Mandrea made a fine save to deny Souleymane Anne in the 36th minute, but the Algeria keeper was beaten a minute later. Mohamed Dellahi beat Mandrea hands down with a well-taken shot and Mauritania were leading 1-0 at half-time.
Second 45': The second-half saw substitute Riyad Mahrez create problems for the Mauritanian defence. However, a certain Niasse was determined to keep a clean sheet on the night. Ounas and Hicham Boudaoui watched on as their attempts were saved by Niasse in the 51st minute and 60th minute respectively with Mahrez creating the two goalscoring opportunities. Nevertheless, Mauritania were able to hold on and they emerged as 1-0 winners.
What’s next?: Mauritania advanced to the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams after securing their first-ever win in the tournament. Algeria, on the other hand, crashed out of the tournament after finishing fourth in Group D.
