Algeria, Egypt and Gabon maintain perfect records

Algeria, Egypt and Gabon made it two wins from two in 2026 World Cup qualifying, while Nigeria remain winless after a second successive draw.

Nigeria are already under pressure in Group C of qualifying after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Huye Stadium in Butare.

The Warriors took a shock lead though Walter Musona on 26 minutes, but Kelechi Iheanacho hit back for the Super Eagles in the 67th minute to spare their blushes.

Gabon maintained their perfect start in Group F with a 2-1 victory over Burundi at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam.

Goals either side of half-time from Jim Allevinah (35′) and Denis Bouanga (83′) secured maximum points for the Panthers, although Abedi Bigirimana (87′) pulled one back for the Swallows late on to set up a tense finish to proceedings.

Algeria were made to work for their 2-0 win over Mozambique at the Estadio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo.

The Mambas held out until the final 21 minutes when goals from Fares Chaïbi (69′) and Ramiz Zerrouki (80′) clinched a second consecutive victory for the Fennec Foxes in Group G.

Later on in the evening, Egypt overcame challenging conditions to beat nine-man Sierra Leone 2-0 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Paynesville.

Playing on a small artificial surface in the rain, the Pharaohs were far from their best but they got the job done thanks to a brace from Trezeguet (18′, 62′). Their cause was aided by the 39th-minute dismissal of Tyrese Fornah before Abdul Kabia was also sent off at the death for the Leone Stars.

Meanwhile, Sudan boosted their World Cup qualification chances with a 1-0 win over DR Congo at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi.

An own-goal from Charles Pickel 11 minutes from time handed the Secretarybirds all three points as they went top of Group B ahead of Senegal’s clash with Togo on Tuesday.
