Arsenal are being linked with a move for Viktor Gyokeres this summer but someone who knows him well has suggested it might not be a guaranteed hit.

Gyokeres has absolutely shone in Portugal this season, smashing in more than 30 goals to take the league by storm.

Naturally, that form has brought interest from other clubs and Arsenal are believed to be one of the clubs considering paying his £85m release-clause.

Other clubs, such as Chelsea, are also thought to be keen on signing Gyokeres.

However, while the goals and performances in Lisbon this season have been exceptional, former Sweden midfielder Frederick Soderstrom has suggested why it might not be the right time.

Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal might not be the right move

Speaking to O’Jogo, former Swedish international Soderstrom has been speaking about Gyokeres.

And while he is full of praise for the former Coventry player, he suggests that another season in Portugal might be the best way for Gyokeres to prove himself.

“I’ve known him since I was 14, he was strong, powerful and worked hard. He has improved his technique and finishing in recent years. He had already scored a lot of goals in the Championship, at Coventry, but everyone was surprised by the impact in Portugal. He came in on the right foot, full of energy and he was always scoring goals,” Soderstrom said.

“The first season is always easier to generate surprises. I think staying for a second season will be more complicated, because they already know him. Everyone wants a player who can score goals like this. Sporting are asking for a very high price and I think only the English can afford it. He did a good job in the Championship, but the Premier League is something else. Let’s see.”

Gyokeres himself could well see this summer as his ideal chance at landing that big move.

As mentioned by Soderstrom here, it’s highly likely that it’s only English clubs who can afford him.

Of course, a move to the Premier League would surely appeal to the striker.

But Soderstrom’s point here is a good one and if Gyokeres gets his move wrong and struggles next term, then suddenly the pressure is on.
