The72’s writers offer their Derby County vs Carlisle United prediction ahead of the League One clash on Saturday afternoon.

Derby County head into the final day knowing that if they avoid defeat at Pride Park then they will seal their return to the Championship after a two-year absence.

Paul Warne’s men have gone unbeaten since their unexpected defeat against Northampton Town last month, strengthening their place in the automatic promotion spots with just one point now necessary to confirm promotion.

Carlisle United, on the other hand, have known their fate for weeks. Earlier this month, a 2-0 defeat to Northampton ensured their relegation back to League Two at the first time of asking.

Paul Simpson’s side bounced back with a win after their return to the fourth tier was finalised, beating Cheltenham Town away from home, but have since lost their following two fixtures.

“Derby County are perhaps expected to win this one comfortably, though stranger things have happened on the final day and all the pressure is on Warne’s men to grab a result.

“There is an outcome where the Rams can lose yet still go up automatically, but I am sure they will not fancy taking that risk.

“I have a feeling that this will be quite a nervy encounter for the hosts, but I do believe they should have enough to get the job done and secure promotion.

“Perhaps not the flashiest encounter, but I am edging towards a tense draw.

“Derby County have their fate in their hands coming into the final day. They’re comfortably ahead of Bolton Wanderers and barring a shock collapse against the league’s worst team, they will be in the Championship next season.

“The Rams can’t let the nerves get the better of them. All the pressure is on Warne’s side with Carlisle having nothing to play for as they gear up for an immediate return to League Two football.

“Tensions will be high and fans will be nerve-wracked. Ultimately though, I think Derby get it done in fairly routine fashion.”
