The72’s writers offer their Peterborough United vs Bolton Wanderers prediction ahead of the League One clash on Saturday afternoon.

Peterborough United come into their final day clash with Bolton Wanderers no longer able to secure automatic promotion this season. They lost to Cheltenham Town away from home with a weakened starting XI during midweek.

Darren Ferguson’s side must now gear up for the play-offs once again, but they must first host Bolton Wanderers who still have a chance of squeezing into the top two.

Ian Evatt’s side are three points behind Derby County as we head into the final day, although if his side win by two goals they would secure an automatic promotion spot should the Rams also lose by two goals.

Bolton Wanderers may be relying on a slip-up from Derby, but all they can do is get their own job done on Saturday and wait to hear the news from Pride Park.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

Peterborough United essentially threw in the towel with their team selection on Tuesday, with a 4th place finish now extremely likely unless they absolutely batter Bolton Wanderers this weekend.

“Should they use a weakened side again to reserve their star players for the play-offs, the match would likely swing in the Trotters’ favour.

“Although it might seem unlikely, it is still within the realms of possibility that Evatt’s men can finish in the top two so they will surely leave it all out on the pitch.

“I think the visitors will take the spoils on this occasion, whether or not it will be enough to seal promotion we will have to wait and see.”

Who is this?

James Ray

“While deemed a contentious move by many outside of the club, Peterborough United rotated in midweek to ensure some rest for their first-team stars ahead of a vital play-off push. Perhaps bizarre given the top two wasn’t out of the question, albeit unlikely.

“Fielding a similar side here would be more bizarre. Momentum is needed heading into the play-offs and losing to a side they may well be facing wouldn’t be ideal.

Bolton Wanderers will be sure to go all out to try and pull off an unlikely automatic promotion, and I think they’ll get the win here.

“Providing Posh field a stronger side, it could be a competitive game, but it’s one I see Bolton winning. I don’t think that’ll be enough to get 2nd though.”
