Notts County had Sheffield Wednesday defender Ciaran Brennan on loan for a brief spell back in 2021.

Notts County brought in the centre-back as cover back when they were in the National League.

Brennan, who is now 23-years-old, made five appearances for the Magpies before heading back to Hillsborough.

Now three years on, the door could swing open for a potential return to Meadow Lane on a free transfer this summer.

Notts County should eye Sheffield Wednesday defender

Brennan’s contract at Sheffield Wednesday expires at the end of the season and he is due to become a free agent in late June.

He is out of favour with the Owls in the Championship and most signs point towards an exit.

The ex-Republic of Ireland youth international could do with laying down some roots somewhere ahead of the next campaign and he would be an ideal acquisition for Notts County as they look to build under Stuart Maynard.

They were promoted from non-league last year and have had a turbulent first term back in the Football League.

The Magpies have conceded 80 goals in their 43 outings this season which makes their defence the worst in the division along with Salford City.

Maynard needs to bolster their backline and Brennan would help tighten up their defensive department. In addition, he is a decent age and the potential to grow and develop in the future.

He has been on the books at Sheffield Wednesday for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

The Sheffield-born man has played 18 times for their first-team and has also had temporary spells away from South Yorkshire at Gainsborough Trinity, Swindon Town and Hartlepool United in the past to get some experience.

Notts County are expected to be busy on the transfer front over the coming months and getting Brennan back wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.
