Morocco & Nigeria edge closer to Olympic qualification

The Moroccan and South African women's national teams moved one step closer to Olympic qualification this weekend, following their respective first-leg victories over Zambia and South Africa.

With the 2024 Paris games on the horizon, the Atlas Lionesses bagged a 2-1 win against Zambia at the Levy Mvanawasa Stadium on Friday. In what was a tight affair in Ndola, it took a 95th minute goal by Rosella Ayane for the two nations to be separated on the night.

Then, as one of Africa's great football rivalries, Nigeria overcame the reigning African champions via a 1-0 win at the MKO Abiola Stadium yesterday.

Battling to contain the Super Eagles pressure en-route to the half-time whistle, South Africa conceded a penalty in the 41st minute, which was converted by Nigerian attacker Rasheedat Ajibade.

With the second-leg fixtures scheduled for the 9th of April, South Africa will host Nigeria at Loftus Versfeld while Morocco will hope to keep their lead intact at Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan.
