'Little bit surprised': BBC journalist reacts after he's hearing about Arne Slot and Liverpool

Journalist Mark Ogden has now shared an update on the chances of Feyernood's Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

Michael Edwards and his team seem to have been incredibly busy of late, navigating the twists and turns of the managerial market ahead of this summer.

It will probably never fully be known how much of a blow Xabi Alonso's decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen was for Liverpool.

For all the world, Alonso looked like a shoe-in for the Liverpool job, even if his old fans will respect his decision to continue his blossoming project in the Bundesliga.

And then there was Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim, who seemed to come and go even faster.

Some reports were even suggesting that there were agreements in place, only for those rumours then all to be quashed.

And that then brings us to Arne Slot, another one of Europe's most coveted names.

The 45-year-old, who has been in charge of Feyenoord since 2021, was said to have turned down Tottenham Hotspur last summer, before Ange Postecoglou's appointment.

Arne Slot is now widely considered the favourite for the Liverpool job in wake of the events listed above, but journalist Mark Ogden has now explained that things may not be easy here, either.

Speaking on the BBC's 'The Tuesday Night Club' Ogden explained Liverpool may face competition from Bayern Munich and Barcelona for Slot.

He said: "He is a leading target, and Liverpool feel that he does match their criteria in terms of style of play, his personality and ability to work within the system.

"Now, people at Liverpool fear that they might have competition from Bayern Munich and Barcelona but he is a serious candidate which I'm a little bit surprised at.

"They have been looking at Xabi Alonso but he ruled himself out quite quickly and Ruben Amorim, I'm not saying priced himself out of the market, but Liverpool do seem to be looking elsewhere.

"Arne Slot turned down Tottenham last summer, so that was a surprise that turned down a very good Premier League job to stay with Feyenoord.

"So Liverpool with due respect to Tottenham is a much bigger club and a much bigger challenge to replace Jurgen Klopp, so you need a big personality to take that job and big credentials and whether Arne Slot is ready, I don't know."

Of course, Liverpool's search appears to have been incredibly meticulous, and should hopefully allay any fears of their next manager not being up to scratch.

But this summer doesn't necessarily seem like the most ideal time for Liverpool to appoint a new boss, unless attention suddenly shifts to the likes of Thomas Tuchel.

All that being said, it has now been explained why Ruben Amorim would personally prefer a move to West Ham over Liverpool.
