3 Wigan Athletic players capable of stepping up to the Championship in the future

Wigan Athletic would be higher up in the League One table if it wasn’t for their points deduction earlier this season.

Wigan Athletic are currently sat in 11th place following their 1-0 home win over Blackpool last time out.

They are 13 points off the play-offs with only seven games left to play of this season.

Here is a look at three of their players who are capable of making the step up to the Championship in the near future…

Sam Tickle

It would be a surprise to see the highly-rated goalkeeper still playing in League One next term. The 21-year-old has become the number one at the DW Stadium despite his young age.

According to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page in the January transfer window, Preston North End and Birmingham City have been monitoring his progress. He may also go one division higher to the Premier League at some point down the line, with The Athletic claiming Everton are admirers too.

Who is this?

Charlie Hughes

The 20-year-old has had an impressive campaign under Shaun Maloney. He had spells on the books of the academies at Manchester City and Liverpool before linking up with the Latics in 2017.

Hughes is now an England youth international and has played 68 matches in all competitions for his current club to date. He is under contract until 2028 but has been linked with West Ham in the top flight, as per Nixon on Patreon.

Thelo Aasgaard

The Liverpool-born man, who is 21-years-old, has fired nine goals in 32 outings this season. Like Hughes, he has also been tied down by Wigan until 2028 meaning they are under no pressure to sell him.

However, based on his form, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see interest in him this summer from teams higher up the football pyramid.
