Leeds United could make contract u-turn amid midfielder's impressive EFL loan

Leeds United are considering offering a new contract to young midfielder Lewis Bate amid his impressive loan at MK Dons, according to Football Insider.

Leeds United youngster Bate remained at Elland Road over the first half of this season. He was named in the matchday squad for the first three Championship games but only played a minute of senior football before heading to MK Dons in January.

It looked to be a statement loan signing for the League Two side given that Bate had impressed in the third-tier with Oxford United last season. And, the midfielder has been a huge hit with Mike Williamson’s side.

Bate has locked down a starting spot at Stadium MK, becoming a firm favourite in the process.

Now, amid his loan success, it is claimed Leeds United could make a u-turn over Bate. Football Insider states that the 21-year-old looked poised for an Elland Road exit upon the expiry of his contract this summer, but his performances away from the club have led to the Whites re-thinking their stance.

They are considering offering him a new contract as a reward for his form.

Who is this?

A deserved deal?

Bate is still only 21 and as a talent signed from Chelsea back in 2021, there will still be plenty of hope that he can maximise his potential and enjoy a fruitful career at a high level. A breakthrough at Elland Road hasn’t come yet, but he’s now proven himself in both League One and League Two.

It means he could yet be an asset for the Whites, and it seems the MK Dons loan has made them aware of this once more.

Time will tell just what the summer brings as Bate’s contract winds down. However, if he was to depart the Championship table-toppers, you would fancy the London-born prospect to have plenty of options elsewhere as he looks to kick on after a strong loan.

Bate has played 15 times for MK Dons and will be determined to end the season on a high as they fight for promotion.
